La Liga was first founded in 1927, when Jose Maria Acha first proposed the concept of Spanish national league. The first Primera División was set to kick off in 1928, with ten of the best teams at that time — Barcelona, Real Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Arenas Club de Getxo and Real Unión, all previous winners of Copa del Rey, as well as Atlético Madrid, Espanyol and Europa who are all Copa del Rey runner-ups – inducted to this new league.
The league was proven to be successful indeed, capturing not only the attention of those who live in Spain but also people from all around the world in an instant. As the league expanded even further, more teams are inducted to be part of this magnificent league. It is now played with 20 of the best Spanish teams, with Real Madrid and Barcelona – also known as the Big Two – facing new challenges from younger teams including Deportivo La Coruña, Atlético Madrid, Sevilla, and of course Valencia.
